Avila Tourist Attractions and Avila Sightseeing
(Avila, Spain, ES)
The architecture, streets and attractions of Avila have received many historical and cultural influences over the centuries. There are now a wide range of sights and tourist attractions in Avila that will appeal to a variety of visitors, such as the Deanes' Palace (Palacio de los Deanes), the Dávila's Palace (Palacio de los Dávila) and the neighbouring Los Cuatro Postes.
Tourists will soon realise that the true star attraction in Avila is without question the City Walls, better known locally as 'Las Murallas) and stretching for in excess of 2 km / 1.5 miles in length, averaging 12 metres / 40 feet in height and interspersed with 88 'cubos' (cylindrical towers). Visitors are actually able to promenade atop the City Walls, from Puerta del Alcázar to Puerta de Rastro, enjoying some great views en route.

Built between the 11th and 12th century, Avila's Las Murallas still surround the city. The walls feature a total of nine gates, formed by two towers, which are each over 20 metres / 66 feet high and linked by an arch. The most imposing of these gateways, the Puerta de San Vicente (St. Vincent's Gate) and Puerta del Alcázar (Alcázar Gate), are situated on the east side of the city, Avila's most weak position due to the plateau of land.

The highlight of travelling to this location is the magnificent panoramic views, which are afforded from the rugged hill. However, also on this site is an unpretentious columnar monument, which marks the spot where Santa Teresa and her brother were foiled in their attempt to achieve martyrdom by their uncle, at the hands of the Moors.
